The worst note I ever got in the theater was a handwritten note left on the stage with my name on it after a rehearsal of George Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara: “Don’t cross your legs in the Third Act. No one likes to see a fat thigh.”

I was fortunate to appear in the 1976 New York Shakespeare Festival production of Measure for Measure directed by John Pasquin and starring Meryl Streep, her then boyfriend John Cazale, Sam Waterston, and my dear friend Judith Light. I played Elbow, who is described as “a simple constable.” At the curtain call, when it was my turn, I walked out to the center of the stage to take a bow. There was a man standing in the fifth row of the audience. How odd. Standing ovation? He wasn’t applauding, his hands were at his sides. As I started to take my bow, he cupped his hands to his mouth and shouted, “Boo!” It wasn’t enough to sit and boo me, he had to stand to make the criticism as severe as he could. I still don’t know what his problem was. Everyone else was applauding.
