Chapter Fourteen

“At least it’s raining again.” Amelia gave Reuben a cheeky smile as he parked the SUV in front of the fabric store. And it wasn’t pelting rain as much as sleepy drizzle—the sort of summer rain that cooled things off, but wasn’t a major hindrance. And apparently was a boon to teens looking to get out of physical activity. She’d already convinced Toby to change the itinerary from a rock climbing class to shopping with a side stop at a trail. “Bet you won’t make me hike on the way home.”

“Probably not,” he admitted. Even his newfound enthusiasm for outdoor activities had its limits. Much as he’d enjoyed everything Toby had thrown their way with his itinerary planning from easy mountain bike trails to kayaking trips and whale-watching boat tours, soggy from rain wasn’t one of Reuben’s favorite states and still reminded him too much of being stranded.

And besides, as with most days latterly, he was in something of a hurry to get back to Toby, who had stayed behind because he had a physical therapist coming by and he wasn’t sure how wheelchair friendly the store layout would be. Over the past couple of weeks, he had improved at navigating short distances with a walker, which remained challenging with his broken arm, but still he used the chair most often.

As they entered the store, which was in a low-slung, older building, Reuben had to admit Toby had been right—narrow aisles cluttered with sewing notions and bolts of fabric at all sorts of unpredictable angles. Paradise for Amelia and her new obsession, but full of hazards for the mobility impaired. He’d never given much thought to accessibility before, but seeing the world through Toby’s eyes was illuminating. And humbling.

“Should I make something for Toby?” Amelia asked, seeming to sense the direction of his thoughts. “Think he’d wear an apron? Or maybe I could do some sort of bag for the wheelchair back? Like a big pocket?”

“That I think he’d love. And that’s very thoughtful of you. I know you were...skeptical of this arrangement to start with.” He followed her to a display of northwest-themed fabrics with moose, reindeer, and trees featured prominently.

“Eh.” She shrugged before picking up a bolt with salmon jumping out of tiny lakes. “He’s not that bad.”

“I think he’d take that praise. And he might like that fabric. Or maybe something with dogs—he’s mentioned the dog he had growing up.” Luckily, Toby had mentioned the dog a few times in dinner table stories, and not just in their late-night conversations.

“He has good ideas sometimes. Like the kayaking.” For a kid who claimed to hate all things athletic, Amelia had taken to kayaking like a natural, and had forgotten to be sullen the entire trip, marveling over the otters and other creatures they’d gotten to see. “And I like his stories. Like when he talks about his grandmothers and their traditions. Or his sisters growing up. He’s fun to listen to.”

“He is.” Reuben had to temper
