CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Jeremiah operated along with the shadows on the warehouseâs south side. So far, breaching the warehouse was proving difficult. The entryways were fortified doors with card readers to gain access. The lower-tiered windows were reinforced with embedded wiring to keep the glass from shattering. And armed guards wandered in and out to give cursory glances of the area before returning. Seeing that the perimeter was virtually a stronghold, Jeremiah wondered if Kimball and Isaiah were having any luck getting inside.
Moving with silent grace through the shadows, Jeremiah noticed that coned lamps were attached to horizontal rods that extended three feet over the doorway, though the illumination these bulbs shed was nominal. Above one of these rods was a corrugated tin roof with a forty-five-degree angle to it. And above that, the second tier of windows.
Jeremiah moved within the radius of feeble light, stilled, then listened.
Absolute silence.
Like a gymnast, Jeremiah leaped from his feet, grabbed the rod, and pulled himself up. Though the rod bent slightly against his weight, it held as he climbed onto the tin roof. Progressing cautiously over the slanted roof, Jeremiah checked the windows along the way and discovered that they, too, were locked. Finally, he reached the edge of the tin roofline. The second tier, like the first, appeared unbreachable.
Attached to the buildingâs corner where the sloping roofline ended were two vertical pipes, both drainage lines, that led to the upper and final tier of the building which was a flat rooftop. Reaching out and grabbing a pipe, Jeremiah pulled at it to see if it was sound enough to carry his weight. It was. So, he stepped off the corrugated tin roof, clung to the pipe, then started to scale the metal tube until he reached the flat rooftop. Once he was topside, he could see LA sparkle in its glitter of lights, the city so massive it seemed to stretch to distant mountains.
Scoping the area, he came upon a skylight. Unlike the windows, the transom was propped open. Lifting the skylight, he could see the catwalk below, about ten feet. Then he heard voices of people milling about, all speaking Albanian. Quietly, Jeremiah slipped inside and hung over the catwalk with the crooks of his fingers gripping the skylightâs edge, then he released his hold. The Vatican Knight landed as softly as a cat on padded feet, the sound almost nonexistent.
As the Albanians continued to move about completely unaware of Jeremiahâs arrival, the Vatican Knight pledged himself to the primary goal, which was to seek and locate the package that was Michelle Gallo.
