Chapter 5: Israel Pounces

The expulsion of the Palestinians [by the Israelis] would require only a few brigades. They would not drag people out of their houses but use heavy artillery to drive them out; the damage caused to Jenin would look like a pinprick in comparison.20

The full thirty-member Israeli cabinet convenes at the Cabinet Office in Jerusalem. Prime Minister Leiberman addresses those present. “Gentlemen,” he begins, “as you know, last night the Iranians, with Iraqi support, invaded eastern Arabia. They seem to be attempting a takeover of the whole Persian Gulf region, and so far they are well into occupying the entire eastern oil-producing rim of Arabia down to and including Bahrain. The Americans and the Arabs are in total shock, having been taken completely by surprise. We, however, were not caught entirely off guard since Mossad alerted me a few days ago that something was cooking on that border. The Iranians have taken a terrific gamble, and at this stage it’s difficult to predict how it will play out. Everything will depend on the Americans and how they react, and Washington is still trying to absorb the facts and understand the implications. We cannot see much that the Americans can do at this stage, unless they are willing to destroy Iran completely.

“For us, however, this development is supremely convenient. It is a regional and global political and military earthquake that provides us with the ideal conditions to launch Operation King David. And, with a world already shocked by their invasion, we have all the more reason to hit Iran.

“Consequently, I would ask the cabinet to approve the immediate launch of our submarine-based nuclear missiles against six key Iranian nuclear sites. We will not target anything else, so as not to disrupt the continued Iranian invasion of Arabia. Indeed, let them cause havoc and continue to distract the whole world. We do expect Hezbollah to retaliate, but if they don’t, we will claim a Hezbollah rocket attack and move in anyway; but let’s hope that they do shoot at us, as that would give us easy political cover. Ideally a similar situation will develop with Hamas in Gaza, and then we’ll go out with all guns blazing.

“Gentlemen, this is the most important decision any Israeli cabinet will have had to make since the first cabinet decided to proclaim the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. We are about to embark on a war that will ensure our survival, in perpetuity, as a Jewish state. We need to stay strong and united as this unfolds. We should expect a lot of noise, not only domestically from the left but also from the world community. We have to be willing to bear this pressure, stay focused on our mission, and entertain no second thoughts or doubts. Once we start, we cannot stop until we achieve all of our objectives.”

After a short debate focusing primarily on how to
