They came the next morning; they were three of them, and they all looked alike – without a single hair on their bodies, fair complexioned. From the waist to the knees they wore a white cloth wrapped like a dhoti. They wore wooden sandals which made a clacking sound as they walked. They had long, brownish-black, shoulder length hair, and their faces were masked by green strips of cloth that looked like the surgical mask-like strips worn by Jain monks. The only visible facial features were their broad foreheads and brown eyes.

They spoke together in Hindi in one voice, soft and firm, “Madhu, we have been sent to take you to the secret place for a certain procedure. Come with us.”

“Tell me the code word that Babaji gave me,” I said.

They whispered the code word in unison. I followed them without hesitation. We climbed down, past the temple and walked behind it. At one point, they said, “This is the place from where Adi Shankara followed the secret path and met the great Sri Guru. After that, he disappeared from public view.”

After walking for another ten minutes or so, they said, “Now, we have to blindfold you.” They blindfolded me with a black cloth and led me on. After a while I heard them opening some kind of door, and then, they led me down a steep staircase. From the quietness and the sudden absence of the chill breeze that was blowing, I guessed we were in an underground tunnel.

When we stopped, I smelled incense. The blindfold was removed and I found myself in a large underground cave, lit by oil lamps. Incense wafted from a fire pit in the middle of the cave. At the far end, I was relieved to see Babaji. “Have no fear,” he said “we have to activate certain centres of your brain, using means other than meditation, as there is not much time. We are in a hurry. Unless these centres are activated, your channels to the higher dimensions will take many lifetimes to open up. Now, drink the soma juice used by the ancients. We have prepared it especially for you.” He handed me a silver bowl filled with a light green liquid.

I drank the bitter-sweet concoction sitting in the vajrasana posture. The first change of mood I experienced was similar to what I felt when I had half a bottle of beer with my friend Ranjit while in college. Then it changed and became more intense. The three people who had brought me there were sitting cross-legged and chanting the Sama Veda hymns. My mind became one with the flow of chants, expanded and spilled out of my body. Intense multi-colored lights appeared, and I remember thinking about the L.S.D experiences I had read about.

Babaji led me carefully to a stone slab on the left side, and made me lie on it full-length, in the shavasana posture. When he spoke, it was as if his voice was coming from far away. “Close your eyes,” he said “and let your Self ease out of your body.
