Late that night, Max, Shell and Ulysses could be found on a nearby hilltop, carefully hidden in the brush and taking in the edge of town that Max had become so familiar with during the last few months.

They watched as a flying saucer the size of a small city block slowly drifted down from the skies, observing it not because it was lighted, but because it was so dark among the background of the wall of stars behind it. The saucer hovered over the church, and the church caught fire. The house they’d been watching the church from also burned.

The saucer made its way over to their former refuge and proceeded to burn down that entire block. All of the artwork, clothing and tools they’d been collecting, as well as one entire house that they’d painstakingly filled up with containers full of water, were now going up in flames. Luckily, they’d had enough to time to move the second stash of water and some immediate essentials during the day, out to another location.

“If you think there really was any food in that septic tank, we might still be able to get it.” Ulysses stated. “I think they only burned down the church itself.”

Max didn’t care to answer. It was all so hopeless.

“Black man walking.” Roland’s deep voice rumbled through the shrubbery. “I figured you might be out here, Max, watching the show from the nosebleed seats.”

Max said nothing.

Shell asked, “Did you kill her?”

“Buried her too, the proper way in somebody’s back yard.” Roland answered. “She didn’t deserve to die like that.” The big man took a seat in the dirt, away from the others. “I had me a good cry over her, over what I did. You can ask Max, I’m not a man who cries all that much.”

Nobody said a word, but apparently Roland felt the need to continue speaking. “I’m thinking about converting to Hinduism, or Buddhism. Any religion that believes in reincarnation. None of the other bullshit religions make any kind of sense to me.”

Max had to agree with that last part; none of it made sense. The entire world had gone insane.
