19 – Meet and Greet

We finally left the dungeon, then the staging area, and were on our way back to Chen’s. We’d said goodbye to Brett and Gill, but for some reason Grace was walking with us.

“I told you already, she needs people around her right now,” Chen explained when I nudged her. I left it alone after that. I may have been a bit jealous, but even I could see that Grace needed a bit of time to adjust to her new abilities. ‘Bubble Warrior’ was a dumb name, but her Skills were no joke.

I ignored them both on the way back, while Chen learned more about Grace and her upbringing. I thought more about what I’d say when I finally met Norman again. I was determined to see him at City Hall, but I couldn’t just demand a different Skill Stone. From his perspective, he’d likely done me a favor. And the more I thought about it, the less I could disagree. ‘Duplicate’ wouldn’t have been my first choice, but who was to say it couldn’t be improved, or changed.

We reached Chen’s and I sat awkwardly across from Grace at the kitchen table as Chen made us dumplings for dinner.

“I’m going to go see Norman tomorrow,” I said, tired of just sitting around and hearing the two talk about boring life stuff.

Chen got excited at first, even though she immediately calmed down and acted like it wasn’t a big deal.

“Who’s Norman?” Grace asked, more open to talking after spending so long with Chen and me.

Chen explained quickly, then turned back towards me. “I’m happy for you, Claire. I think it’ll be good for the both of you to work together. He says he’s eager to show you a few things in the city, like those Challenge Dungeons he mentioned.”

Fuck. I needed to ask about those too.

“Yeah. I just need him to know I’m not joining his team or anything.”

“Which I think he understands,” she said, then jolted as she came up with an idea. “Maybe Grace should go with you! I bet Norman will be able to help you learn more about your Class.”

And that’s how I inadvertently roped Grace into joining me for my trip to City Hall.

Grace told us she’d meet me nearby in the morning. Eager to meet Norman after Chen had told her more about the man, she left right after dinner to go rest and get ready.

I didn’t care anymore, really, if Grace wanted to come along. If Norman and I worked it out, what did I care what he and Grace talked about? Besides, I wanted to know about Classes too. Even if it meant getting that information from Norman.

At the end of the day, I just needed to know if I’d be keeping ‘Duplicate’ for good.

I could tolerate Grace, but there was no way I could let some chick with a class called ‘Bubble Warrior’ have cooler Skills than me.
