Chapter 11
Harpy Eagle, Harpia harpyja
Facundo Locklear laid back on his sofa with his beer, feeling free of gravity. He stared up at the ceiling of his loft and savored the sensation of the cool, worn leather at his back, a sensation he couldnât feel if he were around anyone other than his closest friends. Only Diego, Til, and Frank were allowed to see him so casually adorned, shirtless and in basketball shorts. Cundo would be concerned about anyone else seeing the scars crawling up his right thigh to his chest, back, shoulder, and face.
But on this Sunday afternoon, Cundo felt particularly generous with his comfortability, and bestowed it upon his friends without a care. They werenât certain of why he was in such a good mood, but they werenât going to ask for fear of ruining it. They simply continued to play pool on Cundoâs personal felt in his loft, emptying one beer after another and enjoying the air conditioning.
It had only taken two days for word to spread about the town, and two days after that for it to make it to the news.
Phillip Caruthers had committed suicide.
Or rather, George Martin had. But the people of Zemsta were corrected once investigators released his true identity to the media.
Of all the possible outcomes, Cundo never considered that the man would do his dirty work for him, but he supposed that was a relief after discovering why he did it. After hearing about the list of children heâd assaulted in his suicide note, Cundo had at first been furious at the cowardice, wishing that heâd turned him in when he had the chance, knowing how sex offenders fair in prison. However, when it was revealed in a community-wide outrage that his most recent victims had been t-ball players that heâd been in the process of grooming and molesting when he took his life, Cundo realized that it was for the best that heâd been taken out of commission before he had a chance to hurt anyone else or escape the authorities and flee to another town of potential victims.
Cundo had always been of the firm belief that child molesters were deserving of the harshest possible punishments known to humankind. There was no excuse for hurting a child; even the most devout religious zealots who believed in complete judgement after life, or the most zen of all pacifists, felt a bloodlust where the safety of children were concerned. At the end of the day, they were all animals, and their instincts to protect their young would win out.
Since news of Caruthersâs death had reached his ears, Cundo had felt one difficult emotion after the next. He was furious, then he was gleeful. He was coldly terrified, wondering how his motherâs spirit had played into it. He was concerned about people opening up his motherâs murder case, and his identity being aired out for the town to see.
Finally, heâd settled on grim
