Tomeka
I wondered if I was an alcoholic, or a weed head. I knew I was one of them, but I couldn’t figure out which. Lately, every time there was a problem, I turned to a joint or a drink. That couldn’t be good for me. I wanted to stop drinking and smoking…just not tonight.
I wasn’t sure if I was ready for a life without Malik. When he walked out, my world was instantly in shambles. Couldn’t live with him. Couldn’t live without him.
Through agony, I allowed him to walk out on me. My heart begged him to turn around. Reality let him go. It was over for Malik and me. This was the best move for us.
More tears.
I was crying again because of Malik. Love shouldn’t hurt like this. With each tear came a thought. Why didn’t I have a man like Eddie Lee?
I picked up my cell, let my thumb rest on the numbers, then put it down. Who was I kidding? There was absolutely no one for me to call at this time of morning. Everyone was sleep like I should have been, except possibly Eddie Lee. I needed someone to lean on. Again, I picked up the phone, but put it down.
Gumption came from deep within. Or maybe it was the six-pack of beer I’d inhaled in less than an hour.
“Eddie-Lee”
“Tomeka?”
“Yes. How are you?”
“Not so good, Doc. I could use some company.”
I sighed and crushed my joint in the ashtray as I waited for his response. He didn’t respond right away so I wanted to take the words back. Too bad. That’s the thing about words, once they are out there, there’s no getting them back.
His silence hit me in the stomach like a sledgehammer. It also infuriated me. For the life of me I didn’t understand why he’d offered me his number if he didn’t want me to use it.
“Eddie-Lee?”
“I’m still here.”
“Will you come?”
“What about Malik?” He asked.
“What about Kimberlee?” I countered.
“Kimberlee’s fine. I left a few hours ago to deliver a baby. She’s probably sound asleep because she is used to me keeping late hours. Now, what about Malik?”
“He’s gone. I need you.”
“On the way.”
I couldn’t believe it’d been so simple.
It took longer than I expected for Eddie Lee to arrive. I wanted to call him because I was getting impatient, but I waited. Finally, my dogs began barking uncontrollably. That told me someone was outside the house. I ran to the front door to let the doctor in. I didn’t want him to knock on the door because of the possibility that it would wake Khalil and Khalik.
Sheer disappointment covered my face. It was Malik.
I stood in the doorway. My heart was at my feet. Malik walked past me as I stood holding the door. I didn’t move.
He looked back at me.
“What’s wrong with you? Close the door, and close your mouth.”
Malik hadn’t been back five minutes, and we were already playing Malik says again and it irked me bad.
I folded my arms across my chest.
