Rory’s re-entry to school was less dramatic. A few classmates offered sympathetic comments. One girl even said she was embarrassed to tell people where she went to school.

“Yeah, me too,” he said and walked away.

He and Jake had decided not to eat lunch together for a while. The less they were seen together, the better. Jake sat by himself and Rory accepted an invitation to sit with Ashley and a couple of girls she regularly ate with. Rory tried making eye contact with Jake as he ate alone, but he couldn’t because Jake’s head was practically in his plate.

That night Jake told Rory about the meeting with Coach Walters and Rory cautioned him not to be too hasty.

Jake snapped, “You of all people should know why I can’t go back and play with those guys. Would you feel like spending time with them, showering in the locker room and all, after what they made us do? Where’s your self-respect, man?”

“Geez, don’t get mad at me. I was just saying maybe your chance for a scholarship was more important than the rest of it.”

Jake backed off. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to yell at you. I’m startin’ to get really pissed now. Don’t you feel mad?”

“Yeah, and sad and ashamed. One minute I’m so mad I could kill somebody, and next minute I feel like I want to cry. It’s weird. I talked to Dr. Devlin today. Did you?”

“Nah, I just tried to go to class and not talk to anybody except Walters. That was enough for me for one day.”

“I’m so behind in biology I don’t know if I’ll ever catch up,” Rory said. “I missed a test last Friday, but Mr. Short said I could make it up. At least the teachers are being nice. Some of the kids, too.” He told Jake about a girl who said she felt like she was going to school with a bunch of Neanderthals, and they both laughed.
