Spencer knew this feeling. It came over him just before a big game, a feeling that after all the physical training, the mental preparation, the study of the opposing team’s players, the nutritious meals and all-important game day nap—everything came to a head in the next few hours. And he was more than ready. He was confident and eager.

Tonight he was going to make sure Maggie knew how deeply he was coming to care for her. He was going to show her how good they could be together in bed because he was damned sure Pompous Pete hadn’t been doing the job well. Pete probably had a bag of tricks or some kind of set routine he used that had worked once and he kept trotting it out like a vaudeville comedian told the same jokes decade after decade.

“Do you need to stop by your place to pick anything up?” Spencer asked.

She shook her head.

Good, he thought, pressing a little harder on his gas pedal. His plan was to see where Maggie led him, to be flexible and open. Tonight was the start of them learning each other’s likes and dislikes, discovering, pleasuring, enjoying. And he was a fast learner. He already knew she had a sensitive neck and that she responded to deep, long kisses.

“I’m nervous,” she said when they had finally pulled into his garage. “I’m excited, but I’m nervous.”

Spencer met her at the head of the car, took her by the shoulders, and tapped his forehead gently to hers. “I don’t want you to feel anything but anticipation, Mags. Truly. How about this? Let’s take a nice, relaxing bath. We’ll let all the tensions of the day melt away in the hot water. Sound good?”

“Sounds heavenly.”

“Okay, how about you grab us a couple of waters, and a late night snack that can sit for a little while…” His eyes twinkled and he gave her a slightly crooked smile. “And I’ll set things up upstairs. Take your time. I want to create a mood.”

She cocked her head at him, obviously curious, then nodded.

Leaving her to it, he jogged upstairs to his bedroom and lit the candles he’d put out for the inevitable night she slept over. He also pulled out his MBS—Macho Bath Salts. His sister was an essential oils aficionado and for his birthday once, had given him a jar with a cute homemade label on it that said “One bath with this and you’ll be hooked. Relaxes, soothes, revives.” She’d been right.

He dumped a small handful of the stuff in the tub and ran the water. Some dried up purple petals swirled around as usual, a detail that annoyed him as unnecessarily frou frou, but for once, he was glad, hoping Maggie would find it romantic.

“Are you ready for me up there?” she called from the landing.

I’ve been ready for weeks.

“Absolutely.”

She gasped when she saw he’d shed his clothes already and wore a towel around his waist. No sense in pretending he didn’t possess a prime physique.
