Chapter 16
Imorean groaned as he woke up. He was exhausted, and hadn’t got much sleep the night before. A consequence of waking up every hour or so. His nerves were still rattled from what he had found out the night before. The boy sat up in bed. It was already light outside. Surely it wasn't as late in the day as he thought it was. He glanced at the clock on the dresser between his bed and Toddy's. It was seven o'clock in the morning. Imorean felt surprised as he ran a hand through his white hair. It looked too bright outside to be so early. He supposed he should get up. He knew going back to sleep would be futile. Everything felt… wrong. Just twenty-four hours ago the world had been right, and now it was wrong. Just wrong.
As Imorean got dressed, he thought back on everything that had happened the day before. The conversation he’d overheard between Michael and Gabriel was still concerning him. The locked gates concerned him even more. It just didn't make sense.
“Toddy,” said Imorean, when he was fully dressed. “Breakfast?”
“I don't like monkeys,” mumbled Toddy, shuffling in his sleep.
“And I'm the one that sleep talks?” muttered Imorean, shaking his head. He tried again, raising his voice. “Toddy, I'm going to get breakfast. Do you want to come?”
“Bring me the spaceship.”
Imorean shrugged and left the room with a quiet laugh, feeling slightly concerned for his friend's mental health. His laugh quickly died quickly his chest, crushed down by the weight of his worries.
The smell of food hit Imorean like a brick wall as he entered the dining hall. His stomach turned, and he didn’t feel hungry anymore. Worry pushed his appetite away. The food felt like a betrayal somehow.
He raised his gaze and looked around the dining hall, wondering if there were any students who might welcome someone sitting with them. Naturally, there weren’t many students awake at this time of the morning, so Imorean didn't have many people to choose from.
“Imorean,” said a small voice from the corner table where Imorean and his friends had sat the night before.
The white-haired teenager looked up. Colton.
“You're already awake?” asked Imorean, smiling as he sat down across from the small boy. He thought vaguely about going to get breakfast, but again, as he thought about everything that had already happened, his appetite deserted him.
“I'm an early riser.”
“So am I.” Imorean studied the boy in front of him for a moment, wondering whether or not he should trust him. He seemed genuine enough. “Have you eaten?”
“Yes,” nodded Colton.
“Let's go on a walk. I have something I want your opinion on, and I don’t really want to talk about it here.”
“Alright,” replied Colton, stuffing the book he was reading back into a shoulder bag and standing up.
“So, what's so secret?” asked Colton.
“I'm not sure,” replied Imorean, holding the door open for the smaller, younger boy. They exited the dining hall, and were both bathed in the crisp air of early morning.
