CHAPTER TWENTY

Tate, Liz, Tanner and Maria stood up and walked to the table where their partners were sitting.

“Can you believe this town?” Northrop asked.

“I’ve never seen so many pretty women in one place.”

“Yeah, well, stay away from them,” Tanner said.

“What?” Northrop said. The order also got Sanchez’s attention.

“That’s a condition of our employment,” Liz told them. “You guys stay away from the women.”

“You mean we can die for them, but we can’t talk to them?” Sanchez asked.

“You’ve got it now,” Liz said.

“Is there enough reward in this to warrant our standing for that?” Northrop demanded.

Now Liz looked at Tanner, who said, “There is.”

“That I’ve got to see!” Northrop exclaimed, eyeing the lady bartender — who seemed to be eyeing him back. In fact, even Katarina’s sisters seemed pretty happy to be talking to some men.

“We may have another problem,” Liz said to Tanner.

“What?”

She shook her head, indicating that she didn’t want to mention it in front of the others.

“You fellas gonna stick around here?” Tanner asked.

“If we’re allowed to ask for a deck of cards,” Brand muttered.

“We’ll be back a little later. We’re going to talk to Katarina and whatever other women there are in town who can handle a gun.”

“Women handling guns?” Brand said. “You’ll excuse me, Liz, but what about the men?”

“There are no men,” Liz said.

“No men?” Brand asked incredulously.

“This is a town inhabited entirely by women.” She explained about the dummies on the rooftops.

“No wonder,” Sanchez said.

“No wonder what?” Tanner asked.

“No wonder those young women —”

“Katarina’s sisters,” Liz said pointedly.

“Ah,” Sanchez said, understanding. “Well, no wonder they couldn’t stop talking. They haven’t seen a man for . . . how long?”

“A long time,” Liz said. “I think we should talk about this,” she said to Tanner.

“We’ll be back,” he said, and Brand got up to go to the bar and ask for a deck of cards.

Outside Tanner said, “What other problem are you worried about, Liz?”

“I’m not so sure that the other women in town feel the way Katarina does.”

“What do you mean?”

“That lady bartender wasn’t shy about looking Northrop and Sanchez over, and Katarina’s sisters certainly didn’t seem to mind having men around. If there are other women in town who feel the same way, we may have a problem.”

“I still don’t —”

“What Liz means,” Tate said, “is that we may not have to keep our men away from the women so much as we’ll have to keep the women away from our men.”

“Oh,” Tanner said. “I see what you mean. Tate, maybe we’d better discuss some strategy.”

“No women allowed?” Liz asked.

Tanner looked at her and said, “Oh, Liz ... I didn’t mean . . . I thought you and Maria . . .”

“Stop stammering, Tanner,” Liz said. “Maria and I will look around town, and then we’ll meet you at the hotel before going back to the cantina.”

“All right,” Tanner said, “that sounds fine.”

As the two men started for the hotel Maria said, “What are we looking for?”

“Anything,” Liz said. “We’ll just look around until we find .
