When Erin walked out of the bathroom in her two-piece cotton pajamas, hair up in a messy bun, Slade sat, waiting on the bed like a teenage boy on his first date. He watched her tread around to her side. “Sleeping in your jeans?” She slid under the covers and touched his back.
He shook his head. “You’re dressed more than I can offer. Far more. Not fair.” He turned halfway to her, one leg curled under his other. “How will I be able to trust you in my vulnerable state?” A tiny grin cracked his otherwise serious face.
She laughed. “Just go. You wear boxers, right? Oh, and your shirt you left last night is in the bathroom still, if you need to cover up.” Her eyes flickered over his Marine shirt.
“You’re teasing me. I know you are.”
“Nope. I’ll just wait here and catch up on some reading.”
“How am I supposed to compete with fictional heartthrob, Buck?” He stood and then walked into the bathroom.
“Hey, he’s real to me!” She giggled and hid her face behind the pages, her eyes becoming watery from sleepiness. It’d be nice to have Slade there all night. A closeness with him had begun that she didn’t want to lose. Even if they only stayed friends, which they might in the end. Whatever was in that letter would determine that.
When he opened the door, she looked up to find him in his T-shirt and snug blue boxer briefs. He also carried his Marine shirt, throwing it at her. “Didn’t you want that?”
Grabbing it, she sat up and turned toward the wall, away from his eyes, and pulled her pajama top off, replacing it with his shirt that smelled of him. She slid back in and picked up her book, finding him staring at her.
“Well, that was nice. Looks good on you.” His eyes drifted down. “A little big, but not bad.”
She smiled, feeling a warmth spread throughout. She wiggled her toes, feeling giddy—and sexy in his shirt that hung mid-thigh.
“At a good part?” he asked, eyeing her book with a sheepish grin.
“Nah. Buck is cleaning up manure, and not happily.” She closed the book and set it on her nightstand.
“Poor boy. Needs to hire someone to do that. Mind?” he asked, pointing to the lamp.
She shook her head. “He is the hired help.”
He clicked off the lamp, which allowed the light of the moon to stream through the window. “Ah, a ranch hand. They work hard. I’m sure that pretty lady on the cover will help him out.” He slid in on his side and leaned on his elbow, holding his head up to face her.
“Yep. Who knows what you’ll play in the novel you’ll be covering.”
His eyes widened, making her laugh. “Let’s hope I’m married to an incredible woman, living on a farm.” He reached out and covered her hand with his as she lay her head on her outstretched arm.
She smiled at the thought.
“I’ve never done anything like this before. Just lie with a woman in bed.
