The clinic over, Oliver telephones Homonoff to tell him we will now be walking over to Ward 22 to visit with Bernie.

“We’ll have to figure out what to do with him,” he tells me. “It’s unheard of for people to get well from Ward 22. There’s usually only one way out of there—it’s supposed to be the end of the line.”

As we walk down the corridors of other wards, Oliver unlocks doors with his Bastille key, we walk through, he relocks them. “I find this place harder to take than Beth Abraham. The disease model here is not enough: Atrocity has been committed.”
