By the time the Glitter Ball challenge arrived, frenemies BenDeLaCreme and Darienne Lake had already faced off in a lip sync to Exposéâs âPoint of No Returnâ after landing in the bottom as a team during the cosmetics infomercial challenge. That time, they both got to shantay.
DARIENNE LAKE: For the infomercial challenge, they put us in groups and it didnât dawn on me at all that they were putting people in groups who had some sort of beef. I was like, I get to be with Ben, this is cool, weâre gonna rock this challenge. Weâre gonna be crazy and memorable and do something wacky and fun. We thought weâre doing a great job. Weâre showing the product. I definitely didnât think that we would be in the bottom at all.
BENDELACREME: I felt like our concept was pretty strong and I felt really good about it but the hardest part of challenges like that are having no idea what the judges are actually looking for. We had to make a decision: Are we really trying to sell this? Or are we making the funniest idea we can come up with? Turns out, we chose the wrong thing. We decided letâs make the best comedy sketch we can come up with and then we got on the runway and everybody was like well thatâs not gonna sell anything.
MICHELLE VISAGE: We went through a lot to get Ben to drop the act and give us some vulnerability. And the issue is Ben, the human, is fully engrossed in BenDeLaCreme when Ben transforms into BenDeLa. So BenDeLa doesnât like to bring Ben into BenDeLaâand thatâs not necessarily a problem, but when we see drag queens onstage performing we like to feel the crusty bits, the rough edges. Thatâs what makes us fall in love with someone.
BENDELACREME: DeLa is a character and Iâm a character queen and I am not a queen who is just Ben in a dress. Iâm a character. So I made a very conscious choice when I went on Drag Race to be in character when Iâm in drag. I knew that that might be a thing. I knew what Michelle meant. DeLa is this aspect of who I am. Iâm introducing you to my drag and if you donât know who Ben is, then you can watch the confessionals when it airs on TV. Iâm not trying to show you who Ben is. Iâm trying to show you my art.
BIANCA DEL RIO: I knew early on not to argue with the judges. No matter what they say, you just go mm-hmm, great, and then do whatever the fuck you wanted. But I wasnât gonna give them the, Oh, how dare you? Because Iâd seen that ruin everyone else. Youâre not gonna see some emotional mess or me lose my mind over a critique. They have to say something. But Iâm also questioning things Michelle was wearing. Give me a break! Sheâs judging us? What the hell is that? Thatâs when she had those tits that were just propped up on the desk.
