Trauma

No one type of injury stands out from the others in ancient Greece. Both On Joints and Fractures attest to a variety of trauma that can occur in both warfare and industrial/farming accidents. Treatment of such injuries focused on debriding the wound and maintaining the appropriate balance of dryness and moisture. Roughly 10 percent of the skeletal remains from Athens have fractures. Most were not deadly, showing signs of healing, although in a manner that would have left the person with a limp or other disability. The Hippocratic Corpus levies charges against certain physicians not properly setting and bandaging. Yet these skeletons appear as if no attempt was made to correct the fractures. Some scholars assume this indicates that many could not afford an iatros to properly set the bones. This situation speaks directly to the issue of acknowledging a physical ailment and thus taking on the sick role. Although having fractures, these people may have been able to fulfill their daily obligations, making it unnecessary for them to seek treatment rather than just being too poor to afford an iatros.
