Mary and Miriam
Muhammad had a particular interest in Mary, the mother of Jesus. A whole sura is named after her (Sura 19). However, several things are muddled up concerning the history of Mary that an honest Muslim must re-examine and then ask himself whether indeed this Qur'an came from the hand of the omniscient God.
Apart from the mention that Mary was the mother of Jesus, and was a virgin when she conceived the Lord Jesus, everything else said about her in the Qur'an is false. Sura 66:12 refers to her as daughter of Imran (Amram, father of Moses). This is a tragedy to Islam. Muslim apologists like Yusuf Ali have made unsuccessful attempts to explain this away. The Bible says:
"And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister."12
If the Qur'an says Mary, the mother of Jesus, is Miriam, the sister of Aaron, then Mary was a sister of Moses. But Moses, Aaron, and Miriam died about 1,500 years before Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born. In fact, there is no record of any child by Miriam, Aaron's sister. The problem is that the Qur'an has mixed up the "Miriam" or "Mariam" of Aaron's time with the "Mary," the mother of Jesus, whose name can also be called "Mariam."
Who mixed these things up in the Qur'an: Allah or Muhammad? Can God make such a mistake? Our question then resounds: Who wrote the Qur'an? If this mistake was made by Muhammad, it is pardonable, since any human being can be wrong. But if Allah inspired him or gave him the Qur'an, then we have many questions.
A Muslim has the right to believe that the Qur'an was divinely authored or inspired, even at the expense of reason and in defiance of all evidence. As Christians, we do not force anybody to reject or believe anything, but we realize that where a man puts his faith determines his fate for eternity. We cannot head in a wrong direction and arrive at the right destination. We have the fundamental human right to continue in a lie with earnestness and go to hell. Or we can embrace the truth and enter into life eternal with God. The choice is open to every individual.
The Qur'an says Mary and Zacharias were together in the sanctuary when the "angels" came to Zacharias to give the prophecy about John. It also says that Zacharias was Mary's guardian and that Mary stayed in the sanctuary until she gave birth to Jesus Christ.
The truth, however, is that Zacharias had received the angelic message and his wife had already conceived (the prophecy fulfilled) six months before Mary heard of it.13 Also, Mary and Zacharias did not live in the same town, so Zacharias could not have been her guardian. It was AFTER the angel appeared to Mary in "a city of Galilee called Nazareth" that she visited Zacharias' house in Judah to spend three months with his wife, Elizabeth, who was Mary's relative.
