CHAPTER 16

June

‘Look at that then,’ Kathy Saunders showed Sarah the story in the newspaper. ‘I reckon that’s romantic – he gave up a kingdom to marry her because he loved her.’

Sarah glanced at the picture of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson who was now his wife and apparently very happy. She nodded as she read the article. ‘They’re going for a honeymoon in Austria. Do you think it’s right what the papers say – that she sympathises with Hitler and his fascists?’

‘Perhaps it’s him,’ Kathy said. ‘If he is a fascist, I’m glad he’s not our king anymore. I think our new king is lovely, don’t you?’

‘Yes, I do,’ Sarah agreed. The coronation the previous month had been exciting for the whole country and things had seemed a little dull when the flags started to be taken down. ‘Anyway, how are the plans going for your wedding, Kathy?’

‘Oh, Mum has charge of that,’ Kathy said and didn’t seem particularly interested. ‘We went shopping for a dress last Saturday. I liked three of them and couldn’t pick so Mum said it would be best to spend less and buy a nice costume for going away. She says a wedding dress is only worn once, unless you cut it up to make a christening gown for your babies.’

‘Yes, I suppose that’s right,’ Sarah said. ‘But I think it is best to have the dress you like – after all, you only look to get married once, don’t you?’

‘Yes, that’s true,’ Kathy said and smiled serenely. She waved as Nurse Jenny Brown passed by on her way home. ‘Good morning, nurse.’

‘Good morning, Kathy.’ Jenny nodded and smiled. ‘Have a good day. I’m off home to sleep. We had a long night on the chronically sick ward last night.’

Sarah gave her a sympathetic look. She knew only too well how that could feel. It was bad enough when the ward was busy during the day but things always seemed worse if there was a crisis at night.

‘Have a good rest,’ she advised and Jenny blew her a kiss.

Sarah looked at Kathy. ‘I’d better get to my ward. Sister Norton is back on today and she will be watching the clock, as always.’

Sister Norton had had a few days off at the end of May but she was back now and Sarah would need to be on time in the mornings.

Jenny was yawning as she queued for the bus to take her home. The streets were busy, people everywhere, rushing here and there, making her feel isolated, as if she were not a part of the world. It was because she was so tired, she knew, this odd feeling of being cut off from what was happening, and yet it was also because her life seemed hemmed in and frustrating.

When Chris was in town it was fine. He took her out and they enjoyed themselves at nice restaurants and the pictures or even the occasional dance. Jenny loved dancing but Chris wasn’t very interested and she had to ask before he would take her.
