Luke was a wonderful father figure to Bryn, even in his wolf form. He took the pup from me and groomed her before laying down with the pup. The girl, as exhausted and frightened as she was, trusted him implicitly. I slept with them, too, although my dreams kept getting interrupted with nightmares about the hunters going after Luke and Bryn.

Suddenly, I realized how precious they both were to me, even after such a little amount of time.

I woke up, got to my feet, and shifted back into my human form, because the emotion was too raw to handle with my animal instincts. Some things were best handled with two hands and some sense of humanity.

I watched them from the doorway, too afraid to wake them and ruin this moment.

It both warmed and broke my heart to see it. It made me happy to see that Luke was taking care of her, and it made me sad to see that Bryn was so lost in this wild and crazy world. Luke laid curled up with Bryn, like his paternal instinct kicked in when his wolf emerged.

I had to protect them. Had to do everything in my power to save them and the pack of wolves.

My fury was so great, I punched the door jamb, not meaning to make a noise, but it happened, and Luke looked up from his spot on the floor and looked at me serenely.

"Hey," I murmured to him.

I could see the dilemma on his face, even in his wolf form. He was afraid to shift back in case he lost the ability for good.

"You can do it," I told him, gesturing encouragingly. "You've done it twice now, I think your wolf is here to stay."

He shifted, quickly in fact, like his wolf was happy to zip away and hide for a bit. I knew he'd be back, scoundrel. I smiled at the thought.

"And you?" Luke asked. "Are you here to stay?"

I made to answer, but that was a difficult question, wasn't it? There were so many pieces moving here, I had no idea how to broach it or bring it up that I would have to go out and find the wolf pack again and lead them away. It may have been morning now, but there was still danger on the horizon. Too much was riding on me to stay here for too long.

Luke saw my hesitation and cast his gaze downward. "I see."

It took me a moment to realize what he was referring to and what I was thinking. "No." I shook my head. "No, that's not what I meant at all." I tilted his chin up to look at me, and I marveled at his blue eyes. "I'm going to have to go back out there to find the wolf pack," I told him. "Because the hunters are still out there and they're still out for wolf blood. And if Bryn’s brother is out there, then we need to bring him back. See that they’re raised by both humans and wolves.
