In the Raft of the Medusa (1819, Louvre, Paris), Théodore Géricault depicted the real-life tragedy of a raft of survivors from a shipwreck, trying to attract attention. In the first drawing from the picture, I have divided it into thirds to show how much of the major activity happens on these division lines.

In the second drawing I have put in the major tonal areas of the picture. You can see how the contrast between the light and dark areas gives movement and drama to the painting.

In the third drawing I have shown the major movements within the picture. Some are there through the structure of the shapes, others through the use of light and dark tones. Notice how the movement tends to lead you out of the picture, a movement that is countered by strong lines leading you back in again.
