The meeting took place in one of the two reserved rooms. The wallpaper was yellow and the room was full of sunlight.

There was a knock.

“Yes. Come in…”

I threw myself into his arms, pressing myself against him. I cried for a few minutes, huddled against him like that. Then we went out.

His car was parked in front of the hotel, it was a light blue Citroen DS. He held the front door for her until she was settled in her seat, opened the back door for me, walked around the car and got behind the wheel. He was driving us to the café at the station, which had Alsatian specialties. When we arrived, he pointed us to a booth.

It was very hot. He explained the climate to us. Winds blew from the Atlantic. They were blocked by the Vosges Mountains. They did not blow over the plains in Alsace. Strasbourg had a continental climate. It was hot in the summer, cold in winter. The farther one went toward Eastern Europe, the greater the difference in the climate. We were given menus. Lifting his eyes from his menu, he explained to us what waterzoï and spätzle were, and the different types of sauerkraut. Then he called a waiter. My mother ordered her meal with a false assurance. Her voice went from loud to inaudible. And a question mark seemed to hover over everything she was saying.

My father had to return to the Council. At the end of the meal, he smoked a cigarillo and took us back to the hotel.
