With a Happy Ending

Gasping at the unexpected move, Maisie put her arms around Aiden’s shoulders for balance. A million thoughts flitted through her head, one after the other in a rapid-fire assault on her psyche. Had Aiden meant to echo her heinous verbal slip at the diner? Why did her tummy flutter when Aiden called her “ma’am”? She hated hearing the word from anyone else. What if she was heavier than Aiden expected? Would she let Maisie crush her, too polite to shove her off? Then, once the reality of her situation registered, she worried some more. Had her skirt ridden up during the transfer? Were her panties in direct contact with Aiden’s lap? How soaked were they? Enough to leave a stain behind for Aiden to clean up?

Aiden stopped her anxiety train before it got too far down the tracks, rubbing a hand over Maisie’s hip, then giving her a firm squeeze. “Whatever you’re spinning out about, don’t. Talk to me, let me know how you’re feeling, and I’ll do everything possible to ease any worries or doubts you can’t seem to shake.”

Being a twenty-four-year-old virgin, Maisie had never imagined her first sexual partner would end up being the sweetest person she’d ever met. She’d assumed her options were inherently limited, that she had no chance of attracting anyone worthwhile, and that holding out for the perfect suitor was a fairy tale she’d never get to experience. But here Aiden was, setting an impossibly high standard for absolutely everyone who came after.

Maisie blew out a shaky breath, then half smiled at Aiden’s obvious concern. “No. I’m fine, it’s just…” She weighed which confession was least embarrassing, then said, “I felt terrible about calling you ‘sir’ earlier, at Moe’s. It wasn’t on purpose. I was just…nervous.”

Aiden’s brows furrowed in apparent confusion. “Please tell me you haven’t been beating yourself up over that.”

“Only a little.” Dumbstruck by Aiden’s nonchalance, Maisie wondered if it had been a mistake to bring up an incident Aiden seemingly hadn’t read anything into. “I didn’t want you to think I was trying to pretend you’re something you’re not. You know, around other people.”

Aiden’s expression softened. “Sweetheart, I don’t blame you for being nervous. I dropped by your workplace without any kind of warning or advance notice, knowing full well you wouldn’t be able to acknowledge me until everyone else was gone. I wasn’t sure when you’d be working, so I planned to wait for your shift to end, then catch you in the parking lot before you drove away. But when I pulled up and saw you through the window…” She winced, shooting Maisie a guilty frown. “It was my fault for going in. I knew you had other customers, but after a month of waiting and dreaming…”

“Literal dreaming?” Awed by the thought of Aiden lying in bed thinking about her, Maisie traced a fingernail over Aiden’s collarbone and savored the answering shudder of the body under and around her. “Sex dreams, or…?”

“Sex, cuddling, grocery shopping,
