Chapter 7

Savannah screamed and jumped backward. The beam that had fallen from the church ceiling crashed in front of her, spewing up more smoke and ashes. She backed away a few more steps, closing her eyes. The grip Billy had on her neck tightened.

She patted his back. “It’s okay. Everything’s going to be all right.”

At least, she hoped it would be. She needed it to be. In the darkness, it was hard to tell how much of her way was blocked by the beam that fell, but regardless, she wasn’t sure that she could climb over it. Though the fire had been doused, heat still rose off the beam. Behind her a great crash sounded. Billy began to sob. Even though she was afraid to look back, she needed to know what it was that had happened. Slowly she turned around and found the shadowy form of more beams which had fallen in the chapel area. It seemed the whole area had been crushed by the falling ceiling. Thank God she made it to Billy in time! But now, she couldn’t go forward and she couldn’t go backward. Trapped.

Swallowing hard, her mind began to race. The walls in the hallway felt as though the closed in on her. Each passing moment, the area felt smaller and smaller. What if the ceiling over her head crashed down here? She had nowhere to go. Nowhere to run.

Then she noticed a doorway just before the crashed down beam. A cough suddenly racked her body, but she did what she could to suppress it, knowing that she didn’t want to scare the child in her arms. Taking the only opportunity to escape the hallway, she darted forward and grabbed hold of the metal door handle. Heat seared her hand, and she hissed as she pulled her hand away and shook it. It wasn’t hot enough to burn, but it was uncomfortably warm. She pulled her sleeve down so that it covered her hand and then tried the handle again. Her grip slipped a few times, but she was able to get enough purchase to turn the handle successfully. Without a thought, she rushed inside. Her heart raced in her chest. Unfortunately the door didn’t lead outside. She hadn’t expected it to, but what she had hoped for sat on the opposing wall and she headed toward it. The window was still in tact, but when she attempted to open it with one hand, she couldn’t get it to budge.

Savannah hugged the child tighter to her chest. “Hold on tighter with your legs. Okay? I need to use both my hands.”

His grip around her tightened in response. She then pushed hard on the window. Nothing happened. It didn’t move. No matter how hard she pushed or tugged, it wouldn’t budge. Was it possible the heat from the fire warped the wood or the paint? Or maybe the water from the fire brigade had made the wood swell? She didn’t know why but she knew the window wasn’t going to be the easy escape she hoped it would be.
