Far Right with Blinders On

Secretary Maxwell Hart had enough clout with NASA and the military to begin working on a solution to deflect Comet JM-2026A. The universe had thrown Earth a curve ball, but NASA and private research had been working on numerous ways to deal with earth-crossing asteroids and comets. There was time to formulate a strategy, covertly if necessary, with the help of scientific think tanks and the military.

As for aliens, Hart wasn’t interested in whether they existed or not. SETI was a reputable organization, and the signals were probably legitimate, but interstellar space travel was not considered possible by most scientists. No big-headed extraterrestrials would be knocking on the door any time soon—maybe never.

Hart rather liked Hastings’ response to the news issued by Josh Rollins. The United States needed to get on with business, and he had a government to downsize and cleanse. This was no time for international outreach or a rousing chorus of “Kumbaya.”
