CHAPTER 8

The next morning went pretty much as Al had hoped with no visitors as he and Faith followed what would be considered a normal routine. They cleaned up some of the mess from yesterday’s two encounters and Al was able to take his bath in the washtub. Faith had promised to stay in the barracks and continue the cleaning there until he was dressed so they would avoid any inspirational issues.

_____

It wasn’t until almost noon before Luke began to get concerned by Harry and Ben’s absence. He had Matt round up Joe Evermore and they met at the Horseshoe Saloon.

“Do you want me to go up there and check on them?” Joe asked.

“Wait until tomorrow. I can’t see them staying there another day.”

“Are you and Matt comin’?” Joe asked.

“We need to stay here and mind the fort, but if you have to go, I want you to be careful. Don’t just go riding in and expect to find them there.”

“Why not? What could have happened to ‘em?”

“Maybe Evans didn’t die from that belly wound and managed to kill them both. I’m going to go and talk to Charlie while I can and ask him how sure he was that he hit him in the gut.”

“Harry said that he saw him go down and there was a hole in his left side and a lot of blood. He woulda bled out after an hour or so.”

“I know what Harry said, but I want to get it from Charlie. The doc made it sound like Charlie might not make it.”

“I thought he’d be out for a month or two.”

“That’s what the doc said at first, but when he got to work, he found out that the bullet really screwed up his arm. If he loses the arm, then he’ll be useless anyway.”

“So, you just need me to go out there and do some lookin’ around tomorrow?”

“That’s all. If you see anyone walking around, just watch for a while and then come back here.”

“Alright.”

Luke then stood and waited for his brother before leaving the saloon and heading to Doctor Maxwell’s office to talk to Charlie.

When they arrived, the doctor’s nurse told them that Charlie was sedated with laudanum and wasn’t able to talk for a while, so they returned to their house to start looking at options. They hoped that Harry and Ben would return later today, but Luke was beginning to believe that the never would. When Joe returned tomorrow with his information, then they’d be able to firm up their plans.

_____

Faith was sitting at the table with Al as they shared lunch when she asked, “How long before someone in your family became worried that you hadn’t contacted them?”

“At least a couple of weeks, if not a month. They knew that I was coming here to start building the ranch and when I left with the horses and mules driving a loaded buckboard, they wouldn’t expect to hear from me for a while.”

“So, as far as they know, you’re on your new place happily working to make it a working horse ranch.
