Chapter Twenty Seven
August
Itâs near five, and Iâm desperate to get out of here. I even packed my car before showing up to work today. I need to get to Caroline and Billie. Iâm cursing Gordon something fierce right now. Most of the kitchen staff showed up on time today. The one who didnât will likely be fired by Collette.
After six, I hear, âGo Auggie,â from outside the chefâs office. I look up to find Collette staring at me.
âGo, I can handle this. No need to rush back. Iâll see you on Friday.â
âThanks, Collette. Here are the keys and the codes for the safe and alarm system.â
I strip out of my chefâs coat and hurry to my car. If Iâm lucky and donât get caught speeding, Iâll make it to Caroline before she falls asleep. I speed down the interstate with only one stop for a restroom and coffee break. Before eleven, I park in my spot and hurry inside.
Sheâs standing in the living room wearing a hunter sheath dress. Her hair is piled on top of her head. I see relief wash over her as I lock the door behind me as she moves toward me. I didnât realize how much I need her until the ache in my chest eases even the slightest bit when my arms collapse around her.
âHi.â
âHi.â I drop my lips on hers and taste her. My kiss is hard, hungry, and possessive. I pour each moment of the last week Iâve been unable to hold her when I wanted to, protect her when necessary, and ease her heart onto her. Turning her around, I lower the zip of her dress. In doing so I expose the elegant curve of her back and some of the sexiest lingerie Iâve ever seen.
âThese last few days were somehow worse than when you asked for space.â I set my lips to the exposed skin on the nape of her neck.
Slowly she turns, and her eyes lift to mine. âIt was because for the first time in our entire lives, we shared our true feelings. When youâre hurt or angry, so am I. The same goes for you.â
I tuck my hands beneath the shoulders of her dress and pull it forward. Her breath hitches as I expose her ample breasts surrounded in lace and satin. I lower my head and drag my tongue along the curve of her mounds and follow a path southward, peeling her dress off along the way. Once her dress pools at her feet, I draw her against me as she steps out.
Her hands move to unbutton my shirt, but I stop her by setting my hands over hers. Questions dance in her eyes.
âI need to go slow tonight, Caroline.â Iâve wanted to be in this position for as long as I can remember. Outwardly I pushed her away, at least romantically. My heart knew she would protect and love me from the moment we met, as I will her. Her fingertips drift down my chest, leaving tingles behind even through my shirt.
