Chapter Eight – Axel, Thursday Morning

A startling sound from my phone jolts open my fatigued eyes. Dammit, it's my alarm, not Addison. My unsettled frame drags out of bed, too tired for a Thursday morning run. Officer Pitman down at the Navy Recruitment Center asked me to stop by this morning before work. I step into a hot cleansing shower, praying I still have a date tonight.

Despite my forlorn attitude, a wide grin befalls my face as I enter the Navy's newest building. The state-of-the-art office is clean and modern, designed to appeal to the younger men and women interested in serving their country. The newer ships are outfitted with big-screen televisions and video game consoles. All I needed was the sanitized smell of floor cleaner and fresh saltwater. That feels like home to me.

"Captain Parker, how are you?"

"Great to see you, Officer Pitman, what can I do you for today?"

He laughs, the sense of camaraderie strong between seaman.

"Sounds like you're proper English is slipping; you've been ashore too long."

"Not long enough if you're in charge," I chuckle.

"I noticed you're name on the list of potential crewmen for re-deployment Sunday. Unfortunately, the bunks are full. Sorry, Captain, but you're land-locked for another year."

I release an audible sigh of relief. I'd forgotten I sent the form in after Phil left the other night. Now that Addy's given me a second chance to prove my worth leaving isn't an option.

"Can I count on you to man a few upcoming recruiting events in the next few months?"

"Sure thing, anytime."

Making amends with Addy has turned my entire life around, finally headed in the right direction. This latest setback of radio silence is concerning, but I respect her need for privacy.

Since she still hasn't returned my text messages, I'll send her an email when I get into work to double-check our plans. I'll sweep her off her feet with my charisma and adoration. I intend to tell her, and show her, how deeply in love I'm falling.

“I’m currently out of the office. Please contact Mr. Anton in my absence.”

I sit sadly staring at the computer monitor, crushed I won’t see or kiss my beautiful girl. My gut instinct tells me she’s in some kind of trouble; I feel the discord in my aching heart. I’m about to send another text message when my boss’s high-pitched yell screams through the air.

“Parker! Get in here!”

Mr. Blackstone’s strained request calls me into the conference room, my heart rate spiking. Stewart implemented the final changes late last night, something’s amiss.

“What the hell did that kid do? We’ve lost two servers in the last sixty minutes. They’re bypassing our security systems and transferring data overseas. Fix this. Now!”

Shit. This could have a significant impact on our ability to protect client data. I hope this is an honest mistake and not an outright hack on Stewart’s part. My lungs inhale deeply, reminding myself to act from a place of goodwill and not to assume the worst, as I did with Addison.

“Stewart,
