Charlie

Two Months Later

“Charlie Sinclaire, at your service,” I said as I picked up my cell phone.

“Charlie! Sheriff Bartleby here.”

I stood to my feet. “Sheriff. It’s good to hear from you.”

Two fucking months later, yeah.

“Sorry for the delay,” he said as his accent forced him to chew his words, “we’re uh, getting’ walloped these days with all sorts o’ nonsense.”

“I’m sure you are,” I said as plainly as I could.

“Well, listen,” he said before he concealed a bombastic burp, “ain’t nothin’ really turned up from that break-in of yours. No DNA nowhere. Ain’t no one saw anything. It’s pretty much a dead end, far as I’m concerned.”

“Does that mean you can finish up the report so I can submit it to my insurance company?”

“Yes, sir! I’ll have someone hand-deliver a copy of the file to ya this afternoon at your office. Y’all are at the offices now, right?”

I nodded as I peeked down at my desktop. “We sure are.”

“Wonderful! Sendin’ someone now. Sorry we couldn’t be much help.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. “You’ve been a ton of help. Thank you for taking the time to look into it.”

“All right, take care. God bless.”

I rolled my eyes. “You, too. Bye.”

“Uh-huh. Buh-bye.”

I hung up the call and tossed my phone onto the table. I flopped back into my leather office chair and pinched the bridge of my nose as the world passed me by outside. After finally getting everything delivered two weeks late and triple-checking the integrity of our servers, we had opened our doors last week. And I swear, people were acting like they hadn’t worked in years.

“Good to be back!”

“Oh, man. This place is better than the one in Miami.”

“Did you see those televisions downstairs? Primo!”

“Yeah, they really did it up with this place.”

Don’t get me wrong, it was nice to hear that people were happy we were back in business. Transactions to the tune of millions of dollars were soaring through our servers as if people had waited specifically for us to open back up just to do business with us. We had taken on four new start-up companies that wanted our holding company to maintain the majority of their investments so that on the day of their IPO, they’d be able to come out of the gate galloping as quickly as possible. But, there was something about everything that just… didn’t sit right with me

“Knock, knock,” Bronton said as he cracked the door of my office open.

I waved my hand at him. “Come on in. Close the door behind you.”

He slipped in and did as I asked. “Got you a midday pick-me-up. Figured you could use it.”

I reached for the coffee he offered me. “Thanks.”

“You okay?”

“I finally heard back from Sheriff Bartleby.”

“About?”

I blinked. “The break-in at my place.”

He almost choked on his coffee. “That was two months ago.”

I sipped my drink. “Yeah, I know.”

“And he’s just now getting back to you?”

“Yep.”

“I take it they didn’t find much?”

I shook my head. “Nothing at all. No one saw anything, no DNA was found anywhere, and nothing was taken.
