After a generous meal, they spent the next hours lounging under the shade of an oak tree. Jake spoke with a few passersby about the travel conditions ahead and seemed pleased at his findings. Warm and content, Kate dozed throughout the afternoon and woke to Jake packing up camp.

"Aren't we staying here tonight?" she asked.

"No. We'll want to fetch the horses and be on our way long before dusk settles in. The fort's not a place to mess with at night. The soldiers can get rowdy. It's best to avoid it altogether."

"Awww, I wanted to see," Ben said.

"Trouble will find you often enough," Jake replied. "No reason to go searching it out."

They headed back to the fort. While Jake and Ben went to pick up the horses, Kate went back into the store, package intact in her hands.

The familiar clerk shuffled out to greet her. "Everything fit?"

"I'm wondering if…" She stopped to glance around the store.

"Spit it out, missy. I don't have all day."

"I'm wondering if I could change here."

"Backroom has a curtain," he said. "Go ahead."

Kate stepped into the backroom, untied the bundle, and quickly changed into the dark brown pair of trousers, gray shirt, and green vest. Everything fit perfectly, and the material would last for months to come. She pulled the curtain aside and the storekeeper looked up from his paperwork.

"You'd probably look a sight better in some frilly clothes, but you'll do."

Kate gathered her clothes up in her arms. "I'd better get going."

"Best of luck to you," he said with a wistful smile. "If I was thirty years younger I'd be heading there myself."
