Almost Human: A Memoir of the Thirteenth

If you’re going to read this, here is the first thing you need to under­stand: this memoir is not some belated attempt to explain my actions to humanity or the Order that has tugged on my leash for so long.

No.

These words are solely intended for me…or perhaps more accurately, that which I fear I will become. I suppose that makes no sense to you, gentle Reader. Bear with me and I dare say it might.

The point is this: my impartiality is crumbling.

I have made judgements, taken sides.

Some may call this growth, and perhaps there is some truth to that. Yet I cannot deny that I am diminished as well.

Of course, the thirteenth Archetype is meant to be an empty vessel, the bridge between the twelve that form the Ladder and the mortal plane where their wills vie for supremacy.

And so…there must be a reckoning.

How can there not be?

The Order recognised this risk long ago and has been preparing ever since. Yet their contingencies will prove inadequate. The weight of history guarantees it.

So, my time grows short, and what a delicious irony that is for one who has chaperoned humanity for over eight centuries.

If you recall nothing else, then remember this: reality is humanity’s finest creation.
