CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Morning, Darwin.” Mat was nearly prancing as she made her way through the store the next morning, her mood better than it had been in weeks.

“Uh… morning.” Her employee wore a shocked expression, like he hadn’t expected his boss to notice his existence, much less to comment on it. The young man sported patches of stubble that made him look like one of those magnetic Wooly Willy toys that had half-heartedly been shaken for a redo.

Mat’s breath caught as she spotted Camdyn heading in her direction, and she couldn’t resist raking her gaze up and down the woman’s curvy figure. Camdyn was wearing a demure blouse that somehow still managed to hug her full breasts and a slim-fitting skirt that clung to her shapely hips.

“Good morning, Ms. Stone.” A sudden warmth pooled between her legs as Mat recalled all that had passed between them the night before. “I trust you’re doing well this fine morning?”

Camdyn bit down on her lip, but she nodded confidently, finally saying, “Very well. And you, Ms. Kincaide?”

Mat shrugged but couldn’t wipe the grin off her face. “I certainly can’t complain.”

But by the time she had climbed the flights of stairs to her office and reached her desk, the enormity of what she and Camdyn had done weighed on her like a lead cloak. Her heart thudded at the memory of Camdyn’s touch, the softness of her lips, the way her body had arched beneath Mat’s in pleasure.

But she was Mat Kincaide, future CEO of her family’s business. She couldn’t afford to let desires cloud her judgment. She’d broken one of her cardinal rules by sleeping with an employee.

Mat needed to set some things straight with the younger woman as soon as possible. The previous night had been a one-off. Nothing more. Mat had been in a vulnerable spot and had been searching for the type of comfort sex could provide. That was all there was to it.

But at the same time, she didn’t regret it, and she didn’t want Camdyn to either. There should never be shame when it came to sex.

There was, however, danger. What if they were found out? Would that add more fuel to her saboteur’s fire?

Mat needed to rein things in.

She called downstairs, relieved when Camdyn answered the phone instead of having to ask to speak to her.

“You rang?” Camdyn said, making Mat laugh. She had to admit, she found Camdyn adorkable.

“I did. I was hoping to arrange a little after-work meeting about the thing we didn’t discuss last night.”

“I see. When?” Camdyn sounded unusually calm. Was that what a single night of reckless fucking did for the woman’s poise? If so, they should do it more often.

Except, no! They should not! Which was the whole point of this call.

Mat frowned at the top of her desk, wondering if she’d already taken a wrong turn with this. She quite possibly turned nothing into something by her need to explain how things should be. Camdyn would never want anything serious from Mat.
