E6. ‘Headzville’

Everyone needs a home. Especially when you’re displaced and the beautiful model of that nuclear family with the perfect rosy driveway has fallen apart – that’s when having a place where people know you and you know them is pretty fucking essential. My label Metalheadz has been that place for me since 1994, when I started it with Kemi and Storm.

Because I was on this kind of Terminator mission at that time, where I’d been programmed by my two Miyagis Marc and Dego (I know that’s a different film, but you get the picture), I analyse the things I was doing back then almost as the actions of an AI. The circuitry was definitely taking me in the right direction with Metalheadz, and the humanity of the collective brain within the steely exo-skull of that logo could never be denied.

It was like I’d created a new Lew Joseph or Hammerwich home, but this time full of the right kids. Hey, don’t call me Fagin – I wasn’t going to be putting little children through tiny holes in windows to bring me back the stuff that was shiny in the house. But I wanted them to bring me the sound back. ‘Give me your interpretation of what falling between the black notes and the white notes really is’ – that’s what Metalheadz has always been to me.

Once you’ve been granted the freedom of Headzville, you’re not going to want to live anywhere else. There aren’t many electronic labels which are still reinventing themselves more than twenty years down the line – allowing the old guard like Doc Scott and Digital, who’ve been around since the beginning, to keep on growing, at the same time as bringing through new people, like SP 81 from my old home town, Wolverhampton.
