Chapter 27

Kimberly waited until Hahna, Twila, and her boy toy were behind the closed ballroom door, before she spun on one heel and glared at Big Ron.

“What? What did I do?”

“Why’d you say that to Hahna about how she picks men?”

Ron grimaced. “Yikes. I’m sorry. Was that bad?”

Kimberly exhaled and shook her head. “I know you didn’t mean anything by it, but we’ve been through a lot of shit when it comes to men.”

“It wasn’t a judgment, Kim. It was just an observation. And was I wrong?”

“You didn’t tell a lie.”

“So, what’s the big deal? I mean, if she felt offended by it, I will apologize. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings.”

“No, I don’t want you to apologize. I just want you to be mindful. She really likes this guy. I can tell. I see it all over her. She’s glowing.”

“She is glowing. I was serious when I said she looks the same as when were in college.”

Kimberly wanted romance for Hahna more than she wanted it for herself or for Twila. Hahna had been hurt so many times in the past, and she was so sweet.

“The single life is hard for us, that’s all I’m saying,” Kimberly said.

“You act like it’s easy for us guys.”

Kimberly scoffed. “Man, get the hell out of here, Ron! Most women wouldn’t kick you out of bed.”

“Men want more than sex too. I know I can get a woman in bed, but can I get in her head? Her heart? Y’all be having more issues than a few, and that shit is hard too.”

Kimberly cocked her head to one side. “Issues?”

“You know what I mean, Kim. We go back too far for me to sugarcoat things. I love my sisters, but damn, it’s hard as hell to get close to some of y’all.”

“Oh, you mean the issues we have when we can’t find a man who’s educated, because they graduated and found white women? Or maybe the baggage we have because every A-list brotha has a non-black woman on his arm?”

“Not true.”

“Or perhaps you’re talking about the struggles with coming to terms with the fact that we may never get married. Why? Because all the marrying brothers are marrying white women?”

Ron wrung his hands and stared at Kimberly. She was near hyperventilating as her chest heaved up and down. She couldn’t stand when brothas tried to act like the issues black women had were insurmountable. Especially when they had been a party to most of those issues, from not liking the hair that grew out of black women’s scalps to buying in to every negative narrative about black women on social media.

Ron took Kimberly’s hand and led her to a sofa in the lobby. She sat, and he got her a cup of water that was flavored with oranges and limes. She didn’t want to admit that she needed the water, but she did, so she took the cup from his hand.

“Kimberly. You know I love black women, right?”

Kim nodded. She remembered how
