Inevitably the college’s internal strife became public knowledge:

The causes of the decline of the college were discussed in newspapers and pamphlets, and writers who were confessedly graduates and professedly friends of the institution, published to the world that the alumni were dissatisfied with the management of the college, and it never would prosper with out a thorough reform, not to say a complete revolution.
