Emily

Glancing about the room, Emily estimates she is about halfway through the archiving process. All five levels of her frugally designed shelf are fully loaded, and a slew of larger boxes and oddly shaped artifacts have taken up residence in a dark corner of the room.

Having leafed through more than a dozen of Elizabet’s diaries, Emily has come to learn the woman was diligent about recording her thoughts, life events, and even her worries. Not for the first time, Emily wonders if the church leaders recognize the gold mine it has in Elizabet’s historical account of Seattle. Making a mental note, Emily decides to mention the collection more pointedly to Mrs. Peters the next time she sees her.

Standing to stretch her legs, Emily places the journals she has already perused into a box, laying them end to end in preparation for storage. She places the stack of diaries she plans to read next onto the desk’s surface. When she flips open the first cover, she comes face to face with dates matching the years of the Great War.

Of course, Elizabet wouldn’t have called it such when the war began in 1914. Back then, before America entered the war, they referred to it as the European War. Emily remembers from high school history class that the war had three names: the European war, the Great War, and World War I. Sadly, no change in label could alter the reality of what occurred between 1914 and 1918.
