Chapter 18

The Snake Wrapped in Silk

Erin shut the door to the back room, leaving Victor behind with Ren’s damning photos. The long row of jet windows lining either side made her dizzy, and seeing Wes – Victor’s head of security – made her want to jump out of the emergency exit for fear of being murdered.

She knew too much now.

A plot within a plot. Or maybe just one plot?

Could Victor really be innocent?

No.

Erin muted her inner thoughts and honed in on the bouncing leg attached to a sea turtle-socked, loafer wrapped foot. She marched over to Huck and fell harshly in the seat across from him to pull his focus away from his phone.

“You’re a piece of low-grade, ugly shit, Connor.”

Huck sucked his teeth and finished his text before paying Erin any attention. “Oh, we’re no longer on a first name basis, Locksheer?”

“What happened to ‘Team Reneya forever?’” She squeezed his calf so hard her nails nearly drew blood.

“Yow, shit!” He uncrossed his legs and smacked her hand away. “My allegiance never changed,” he spoke through gritted teeth. “How about yours?”

“Oh, no, no, no.” She leaned forward. “You and Victor play the same social schemes – deflection, misdirection. You learn from the best, huh? You might have dragged me onto this plane, Huck, but now you’re stuck with me.”

On cue, the jet powered on and the stewardess began locking the few open compartments.

“You knew about the photos all along,” Erin stated. “And sat there comforting Ren like she was some wounded white dove, pure of any evil.” She shook her head, watching as Huck relaxed. “This is the part where you tell me the photos are fake,” she whispered angrily.

“Why? It’s clear now that you wouldn’t believe me if I did. All the telltale signs are there – flaring nostrils, blotchy skin – you believe the billionaire’s game to be reality now.” Huck clicked his tongue disapprovingly.

Erin cooled herself as she heard the main hatch shut and the pilot announce the pleasant flight full of clear skies and low winds ahead. She smirked, pulling her own phone from her bag. “So… if I were to text Reneya right now about this whole situation—”

Huck laughed quietly. “She would show you what she showed me… an endless reel of social media pictures and stories leading up to her time at Dolly’s Media, none of which were taken in Silicon Valley, near Brazal’s little software empire. She would tell you that what Victor has shown you is a fallacy and a farce, just to absolve himself from marriage to her and begin his next hunt. We had the conversation in your apartment, when all you girls fell asleep.”

Alarms were going off in Erin’s head. Every word dripping off Huck’s forked tongue made her want to vomit.

“Why wouldn’t she tell me? Aren’t we supposed to be best friends…”

“Oh, Erin.” Huck snapped his tongue in pity. “No one wants to hurt the poor girl too emotionally stunted for all of Victor’s games. It must be a curse to be so disconnected.
