Chapter 12
The place Sarony had chosen for lunch was a small out of the way diner in Highfields Grove. Cassie knew it well enough but had never been inside. She had openly informed her mother that she would be going to lunch with her new boyfriend; that he had come in and asked her out. “And I missed him,” Victoria had complained, adding “as long as you’re happy darling, and have you heard from Richard?” Cassie had retorted that as far as she was concerned she had no wish to see him. Richard hadn’t sounded too happy on the phone and Cassie lived in fear of him either calling her or physically putting in an appearance at the hospital, knowing how he felt about her.
Sarony ordered a coffee and sandwiches, but not before asking Cassie if she would prefer a meal, to which she had shaken her head, saying that ‘a sandwich will be fine’.
“So tell me a little about yourself.” Cassie began. Leaning her elbows on the table and supporting her chin on her clasped hands, she watched as he put two spoonfuls of sugar into his black coffee which he then stirred and stirred. “For instance, why do you always wear mittens when the weather is quite mild?”
Sarony regarded her astutely, head raised from his coffee. In reality his concentration on stirring the coffee for so long was to avoid the kind of imposing questions he guessed she’d probably ask. He shrugged. “Habit I suppose. And you?” He tapped her nose playfully. “Why do you ask so many questions?”
“Because, I really would like to know more about you and why you’ve held such an air of mystery about you.”
Sarony turned round swiftly when the door opened to admit a young couple. In fact, Cassie observed, since the minute they arrived he’d been glancing behind him each time the door opened, as if he had been expecting someone. When he turned back to face her, his face was wreathed in smiles. “There’s no mystery about me I can assure you. I’m just your ordinary average guy.” ‘I wish’ he thought. Cassie had decided there was nothing remotely ordinary about him. “And your mother’s a shrink at Highgate General then? I found out that much.”
“How?” Cassie began to feel slightly uncomfortable now. If he’d discovered her mother worked at the hospital then he’d find out other things too.
“I worked there once.”
“So what else have you found out about me then, John?” Cassie asked with a smile.
“That’s about it really. I don’t need to know anything else.” He sipped at his coffee thoughtfully.
“No one to know things about someone to want them, do they? But I mean you could have just been released from jail for all I know, for... for drug taking or something.”
“Well I haven’t, I can assure you.” Sarony said taking another sip of coffee.
Cassie took a bite from her sandwich and made a face. “Why do these things always taste of the plastic they have been wrapped in?” she whispered.
