Chapter 12

The card players gathered there had spent far too much time clustered around their table, Eddie thought. It smelled of sweat and days-old body odor. Worse yet was the sting of urine assailing Eddie’s nostrils along with the reek of excrement. He caught his breath and held it. They more than likely shit and pissed where they sat, too lazy or too involved in their game to visit the washroom just next door. Mixed with all of that was the heavy stench of a million cigarettes and a million cigars. Smoke hovered in the dull light like a pink, cancerous fog.

Hitler spoke. “Don’t just stand there—you’re late as it is. Sit down and I’ll explain how it goes.”

Eddie sat, breathing slowly through his mouth, clenching his nostrils with muscles people often used to change diapers or clean up after pets where fingers weren’t an option. That only made matters worse; it was a stench he could taste.

The man to his left without pants spoke next. “It’s good to see you this evening, Eddie.” He held out his hand and Eddie shook it. The skin was cool and damp, the grip weak and insincere. “I’m Joseph Goebbels.”

Eddie pulled his hand away a little too quickly. This was the man that had poisoned his wife and seven children shortly after Hitler’s own bloody demise. He looked to the one seated at his right. “You’re… Himmler.”

“Please—my friends call me Heinrich.” He smiled and Eddie winced inwardly. If looks could kill, Himmler’s beaded eyes could rape and torture any soul along the way.

Eddie turned away from Himmler and faced the naked woman to his immediate right. “Don’t stare at my tits,” she warned. “Look at them and I’ll put a bullet in the back of your head.” He heard the clunk of a gun being placed on the table and glanced at it quickly. A luger, of course.

She wasn’t as recognizable as the other three, but Eddie knew her from somewhere. She was quite striking, and though he didn’t dare look down any further, he suspected she had a body to match.

“Ilse won’t harm you,” Goebbels said from his left. “She hasn’t shot anyone in years.”

It came to Eddie in an instant. Ilse Koch—the Bitch of Buchenwald. She had been the wife of a Nazi Commandant at a concentration camp Eddie could no longer remember the name of. Her crimes against humanity had been atrocious. Ilse was infamously known for her morning walks past prisoners wearing nothing but boots. If any of the men dared look at her body, she would have them shot. Sick bitch. Eddie wondered if she had joined in on the game already naked.

“You’re all dead,” Eddie blurted out. At least he didn’t say should be dead.

“No one stays dead here for long,” Hitler said as he dealt the cards. He placed a card in front of each of them, face down. A final card he placed in front of himself, face up—a five of spades. “Can you beat me?” The question was meant for all of them but his unblinking glare never left Eddie.
