“Aren’t I supposed to be the reckless one?”

I look over to where Tennant is leaning against the doorframe, watching me dress. “Worried about me, Ten?”

He scoffs. “Definitely not. I just don’t want to drag your stupid ass out of the meeting when you get yourself killed. Plus, someone will have to tell your kid, and I don’t trust anyone else to do it.”

“Don’t tell me you’re scared of a fifteen-year-old,” I tease, as I shrug into my jacket.

“Scared? No. But I know how lethal he is, and I would rather not end up in his crosshairs.”

“Fair enough. But you don’t have to worry. Nothing is going to happen.”

Tennant doesn’t reply, but he falls into step behind me as I leave the closet and make my way to the bedroom door.

It takes effort to keep my steps measured and not let him know that every movement pulls at my stitches. For all his denial, I know there’s some attachment to me. Deep, deep inside his fucked-up head.

The car is waiting for us out front, and so is Roman.

“Go back inside.”

My son raises his chin. “No. I’m going with you.”

“Roman—”

“I won’t get out of the car,” he says. “But I won’t stay here and worry either. Every time you leave something bad happens.”

Shit. As much as I want to, I can’t tell him no. He’s not wrong to worry considering everything that’s happened the past few weeks.

“Fine, but you are to stay in the car. No one can know you’re with us.”

He nods and slides into the back seat. I can feel Tennant’s measured gaze, but I don’t look at him.

I take the seat next to Roman while Tennant slides in opposite us. “That a new suit, Roman?”

I shoot Tennant a look, but he just smirks and relaxes back into the seat.

“One of them,” Roman replies. “Figured it was fitting to wear it now.”

Tennant nods in approval. I tune them out, exhaustion hitting all of a sudden. I don’t want to deal with this. I’m the Boss, the one who makes the hard decisions, and I’m very good at my job. Except this is one decision I wish I never had to make.
