My eyes adjust to the dim interior. The new soldier pushes me roughly onto the bench. No sooner has my butt hit the wood than I see who’s bunched together across from me. Charlie, Goose, and Cody regard me with regret, hands bound behind their backs. Charlie shakes his head, Goose fidgets, and Cody nurses a fat, bloodied lip. Anger and fear swirl inside me as I observe my friend’s swollen mouth.

Cody! Are you alright?

I’m fine, he thinks back.

No, you’re not!

Long, red scratch marks on his face make me seethe. His interrogators were obviously crueler than mine. I can only hope he left behind some retaliatory wounds, some revenge for his harsh mistreatment; if not, I will, somehow. Some way. On either side of my friends, two camo-clad guards sit stiffly, lording over us. Fabric swishes again, and I look over to find Hartley climbing into the back of the truck with us, a smile on her lips. She plunks onto the bench next to me, making a show of getting situated. We’re the prized pigs, and she’s ready for her sparkly, blue ribbons.

Bitch…I contain.

I look past her to find another unfamiliar soldier climbing aboard. Thankfully, G.I. Nose and Bushy Brows are gone. Hopefully they’ve got an EZ Pass to stricken death.

One can only hope…

The truck rumbles to life; voices carry from up front. A few shouts later and we’re rolling off to a destination I don’t want to fathom.

Cody! I think. Where are they taking us?

Nowhere good, Hannah…
