The bond Leticia forged with her fellow recruits superseded any friendship she’d ever experienced in school, or even the one with her brother. When one dropped to their knees or wavered, another was waiting in the wings to show them back to the way of the warrior.

Mercy kept her eyes on them like the eagle on the Marines emblem, knowing they all wanted into Raider training. At the end of basic, her recommendations would be the difference between success and failure.

Leticia could shoot, but here she honed her skills and learned to take apart and put together any new weapon thrown her way. She studied harder than she ever had in school, learning everything there was to know about military strategy.

She watched Mohammed and Nathan with a secret envy. They had the kind of spark that was rare and undying. During training, their stolen glances of support radiated love and devotion. Their relationship was no secret, and Leticia would have no problem fucking up anyone who dared show they had a problem with it. Then again, both Nathan and Mohammed were built like sentinels—step up to them if you had a death wish. Mohammed was a boxer, with his father owning a string of gyms. He’d enlisted to see the world, and then space. Nathan had taught piano as a side hustle to his main job as a mechanic.

Though she hadn’t wanted a commitment with Avery, she hoped there was someone out there for her. There were her dreams as a soldier, and those were her priority for now, but she still possessed those desires of a woman. Was there a man who would complement her life in ways that could only be described as a bright constellation to light her way for the times life went dark?

Maybe a distant star would bring them together.

In her footlocker she kept the photograph of her mother as a Marine. Desiree spotted it one morning.

“Your mom is… damn. A gorgeous machine. She would have been a Marine Raider.”

“I know.” Leticia instinctively smiled and ran her fingertips across the photo. “I want to get into that shape. What comes next is no joke.”

“Where do you want to start?”

“The pull-up bar,” Leticia said. “Running with a pulse rifle in hand, and all the rest of the gear, brings a special kind of pain.”

“Sounds about right. Why don’t we start fresh tomorrow?”

“Thanks, Desiree. You got it. Las lobas.” When her companion gave her a look, she added, “The wolves.”

If she wasn’t practicing her marksmanship, Leticia was in the gym with Desiree, preparing her body for what would be the most grueling weeks of her life. Her goal was to fight the biggest motherfuckers and do so with her bare hands. Basic training was designed to create quitters, she knew. The more that dropped out, the easier it would be to find out who had the stuff to succeed, to become a part of the elite.

She would be one of them.

Their hard work—on the range, in the gym—began to pay off.
