The ship was quiet. It was an eerie quiet, promising peril rather than peace.
Ripley led the way down the long corridors. The crew of the Betty (and their hostages) followed, guns at the ready.
Ripley stopped at a corner. The others stopped behind her.
She cocked her head to listen, then said, âClear.â
Johner moved up beside her. He was curious. âYou've come up against these things before, haven't you?â
âYes,â said Ripley.
âSo what did you do?â
âI died.â
Johner groaned and dropped back. âThat wasn't really what I wanted to hear.â
Distephano pointed to a door. âThis way.â
He led them through. They were in a lab. The electrics were damaged, and the lab was lighted by intermittent flashes, like a dance club under a strobe.
The cryo-chambers Christie and Call had carted off the Betty were standing upright around the lab. Johner and the others went to look inside them.
Inside each coffin-shaped container was a corpse. Men and a few women, all with their chests torn open.
All with their eyes wide open, still locked on some final image of indescribable horror.
Ripley scanned the corners of the lab. In the intervals of sharp light, she saw what appeared to be a terrified face.
A man. Still alive!
Ripley started toward him, and he ran at her screaming, brandishing a piece of rod.
âAaaaahhhh!â
âDrop the rod, man!â Christie ordered.
The terrified man dropped the rod. It clattered to the floor. He looked at the faces gathered around him. âWh-what's going on?â he stammered weakly.
Christie bent down and read the name stitched onto his coveralls. âWhat's going on, Purvis, is that weâre getting the hell off this ship!â
âWhat ship?â Purvis asked. âWhere am I? I was in cryo on the way to Xarem, to work for the nickel refinery. I woke up⦠I don't understand. I saw something â horrible! â
Call touched him gently on the shoulder. âCome with us,â she said. âIt's too dangerous here for you.â
Ripley bent down and sniffed the man's chest. Then she looked up and said, âLeave him.â
âNo!â Call said. âWeâre not leaving anybody on this boat!â
âHe's got one inside him,â Ripley said. âI can smell it.â
âIn-inside me?â Purvis asked, his teeth chattering. âWhat?â
âDamn!â Johner said. âI don't want one of those things birthing anywhere near my ass!â
âIt's a bad risk,â agreed Vriess.
âWe can't just leave him!â Call protested.
âI thought you came here to stop them from spreading!â Vriess said.
Call turned to Wren. âIsn't there a process? Can't you stop it?â
âWe got no time for that,â Christie said.
Wren shook his head. âI couldn't do it here. The lab's torn apart.â
Christie grew thoughtful. âI could ice him. Painless, back of the head. Might be the best way.â
âThere's gotta be another way,â Call insisted. âWhat if we freeze him?â
Purvis listened to all this with growing terror. âWhat's inside of me?!?â
âA parasite,â Wren said. âA foreign element that â â
Ripley stepped forward. âThere's a monster in your chest,â she told Purvis with chilling directness. âThese guys hijacked your ship and sold your cryo-tube to this guy.â She indicated Wren. âAnd he put an alien in you.
