Meanwhile, Antony’s wife Fulvia and his brother Lucius were bungling their campaign against Octavian in Italy; and in the East, the surging armies of the Parthians had advanced into Syria and slain Antony’s newly installed governor. The Parthians next pushed onward into Judaea and captured Jerusalem, forcing Herod to seek refuge in the mountain citadel of Masada. Antony was blamed for both these events. By neglecting Italy, he had allowed Octavian to gain a firm foothold for future operations, and with the loss of Syria and Judaea, the once-powerful eastern provinces of the empire now lay in shambles.
