Chapter Ten

Crashed in Margo’s guest room, I slept like the dead despite the powers humming in my veins. The smell of coffee didn’t lure me to the land of the living, but frying bacon did the trick.

I puttered down in my pajama pants and tank top and filled a coffee mug.

“Sleepy head. Mason wore you out on the road?” she asked as she fussed over her cooking.

“No,” I said a bit too quickly. “Just Yetis were the problem, aggressive and not friendly. I drained a couple, and their power and rage are exhausting.”

“I can’t even imagine. Did you find out who killed that boy?” she asked.

“Not yet. We ruled out the Yeti.” I mentally pulled the bacon out of the pan and flipped it.

Margo watched me. “You don’t need to do that.”

“It’s good practice. Control and fine tuning.” I downed the coffee and refilled the mug.

“Why didn’t you stay at Mason’s?” she asked.

I froze, the mug headed for my lips. “Why would I do that?”

Margo shrugged. “I’m not stupid. I know what you have with him is rather complicated. There is history between you. Your new powers don’t help—some men don’t like women stronger than they are and you’re still adjusting to them. But, as a woman, I must say you’re too smart to let a good man go. No one really buys the just friends stuff.”

I sighed. “We’re not really more than that either… We always put work first, so nothing ever…”

I couldn’t finish the sentence. I didn’t know how he felt. I had no clue, really, how I felt. Feelings and attraction weren’t always the same, and I wasn’t even sure what I was. Who I was. Not knowing my father’s side of my heritage made it feel like I was incomplete. How can you let someone know you when you’re not sure you really know yourself?

“All those new powers and magical interference will only magnify things. Relationships are always changing, people change, so don’t use that as an excuse.” She cracked a few eggs and took the bacon off the heat.

“Exactly why it should be avoided.” I smiled. “FBI has rules against fraternization anyway. I could be fired.”

“That’s crap. He’s not working for the FBI anymore. You two work together like a couple. You’re attracted to each other. The magic, the job stuff—it’s all excuses. You’re scared,” she said.

“Isn’t everyone scared of a relationship that might mess up their career or their life?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I suppose so. But Mason isn’t FBI anymore, and you seem to forget that or think he’ll go back. You don’t act like you’re really one of them anymore either. You’re clinging to what you were.”

“My magic is weird. What guy wants a woman who is so much stronger than him and can’t even define her powers. Who knows what I really am,” I pointed out.

“That’s white man talk. Turn that crap off and get it out of your mind.” Margo dished out two plates full of food. “Sit. Eat.”

I took my coffee and sat.
