In 2010 we organized the Serpentine Map Marathon in London at the Royal Geographic Society. We invited Ai Weiwei to be part of it. Mapping is a very exciting field, one of the major topics on the Internet, what with Google Earth and new navigation systems. Maps – and this is true also for Ai Weiwei’s work in general – produce new realities as much as they seek to document current ones. Maps go beyond the spacetime of the present. This interview addresses navigational and cartographic strategies in Ai Weiwei’s work. In the week that it was recorded Ai Weiwei also inaugurated his installation in the Tate Turbine Hall.
