TOUR DE FORCE
“Never tell me the odds!”
–Han Solo
One of the most important and inspirational touchpoints for me during all of this was a book by Lance Armstrong called It’s Not About the Bike. My sister, Kerry, bought it for me, and it detailed his experience with testicular cancer and specifically how he got through it all. This was before his doping scandal broke, and at the time, he was an inspiration to millions and was raising a substantial amount of money for cancer research. Before reading about him, I didn’t know much about Lance other than he had overcome cancer to win the Tour de France several times. The yellow bracelets that read “Livestrong” were everywhere, only adding to his prominence. Reading his book was the biggest source of support while I was going through my treatment this second time.
Years later, his improprieties, which I don’t condone, were revealed, but reading about how he overcame cancer and the mindset and practices that he adopted to get through it, helped give me strength and hope. Knowing that if he could get through his cancer experience, which was worse than mine, his having spread to his brain, gave me the encouragement I needed to believe I could do the same and beat my cancer.
Reading about Armstrong made me feel empowered. I was inspired to overcome whatever I needed to in order to become 100 percent healthy again. I meditated and did visualizations of my body being healed on a cellular level. One big takeaway from It’s Not About the Bike was that Lance’s doctor didn’t tell him the chances for his survival. He knew the statistics regarding the survival rates of Lance’s particular stage of cancer, but instead of relaying this data, he cemented in Lance’s mind, confidence, that he was going to overcome his cancer.
Before Lance received treatment, he went to see two doctors who were considered at the top of their field. One was in Houston and the other, at Indiana University. The first doctor told him the chemotherapy was going to be extremely caustic and cause serious side effects, including damage to his lungs, which would preclude him from ever racing competitively again. The second doctor at IU told him that he would be back to racing after his treatment. Lance asked the doctor at IU why his prognosis was so different from the doctor’s in Houston, to which the doctor at IU replied that they were using some new experimental drugs that had shown promise, and that he felt Lance would respond well to them.
When Lance asked the IU doctor how he could trust him, the doctor replied, “As good as you are on your bike, I’m even better as a doctor.” That was all Lance needed to hear in order for him to decide to be treated by him. A year later when Lance was healed and cancer-free, he went back to IU to visit the team of physicians that cured him. When Lance asked the doctor
