Chapter Seven

Scott didn’t want to examine too closely his decision to take Kitt to the Crab Shack for dinner. Yes, Penny worked there, but it was also the best place for a shore dinner—and a person couldn’t beat the prices. So, he hushed the voice inside his head telling him to leave and go somewhere else as he opened the door to usher Kitt inside the rambling building that had been a fixture in town since well before his own family had bought a house there. It was early, meaning that few people sat dotted around the main room.

They had decided on eating dinner around the time usually reserved for the elderly because, after returning from the beach, they’d enjoyed something of a brunch and had eaten nothing since. Scott had scarfed down pancakes, bacon and even strawberry shortcake with more gusto than he’d had recently for food. Something about his talk with Kitt concerning the horrors of his last deployment had lifted an invisible weight off him. He could almost breathe easier, and there was room in his stomach for more than the sourness of guilt.

Now he was just getting maudlin, perhaps. He wasn’t into therapy and delving into his feelings. Yet, as he entered the cool, dark restaurant, he did feel lighter and happier than he had since he’d lost his best friend. A genuine smile broke out as he approached the hostess. He was determined that it would be a fun night. Kitt deserved it, not only because of the crap he’d been dealing with in his own life, but also because of the shit Scott had thrown at him in the last twelve-plus hours. Scott could only hope that this evening would be a sufficient way to say how sorry he was about the whipsaw events whereby he’d led the boy on, only to rebuff him strongly within seconds. He was lucky Kitt was such a forgiving kind of person.

By all rights, Kitt should be furious with him, yet out on the beach, he hadn’t hesitated to offer comfort. It spoke volumes about the guy’s magnanimous character. Scott’s behavior, on the other hand, was nothing to be proud of. And it wasn’t merely how he’d latched on to Kitt, literally, in the throes of a nightmare. Scott’s head had been clear out on the beach, and still when Kitt had offered simple comfort, Scott had taken advantage of it. He could feel the light warmth of Kitt’s ass on his lap, despite the hours that had elapsed. It had felt so right to put him there and hold him tight. So had the arousal that followed, and that was something Scott felt guilty about. He was giving Kitt mixed signals and that wasn’t right. It was disturbing for him, at least—probably for Kitt, too.

And what did it say about him that he kept reacting this way to another man? Why had it felt like a lie when he’d said he loved J.J. as a brother? There
