âAvery?â
Ameliaâs voice was distant and strange, like I was hearing her underwater. The words blurred, and I blinked hard, as though that would help me hear better. âWhat?â I whispered.
âWhen Noah and his parents areââ
âCole.â
Her eyes, frozen in static sympathy, wavered a bit. âI know how painful this is.â
I laughed, one loud throaty bark. âNo, you donât.â
âIâ¦I appreciate it, then,â she said. âBut you have to realize that ColeâNoahâis their child. The last time they saw him, he was a baby. They spent fifteen years not knowing if he was cold, or scared, or hungryâthey had no idea if they would ever see him again. Last night they got a phone call that hurt too much for them to even hope for. Do you understand?â
She wouldnât look away. I squeezed my eyes shut. âCole is my brother,â I said. My voice was strange. I barely recognized it, and I wouldnât understandâ¦I wouldnât appreciateâ¦that I was tapping into a level of fortitude I didnât even know I had by even having words to speak until much later. âHeâs been my brother since he was a baby. I spent fifteen years making sure he was never cold, or scared, or hungry. Theyâre taking him away, and I donât know if Iâll ever see him again. Do you understand?â
Amelia pressed her fingers together. âHe needs to go home.â
I think we should go home.
The fire was still alive when heâd said that, still eating whatever we could have gone back to when weâd had one horrible chance to make one horrible decision.
âTheyâve agreed to let you say goodbye.â
I nodded faintly. Goodbye. That word had never meant much, because Iâd never had anything I wanted to keep. But nowâ¦
Goodbye, I thought. Goodbye, Mother; goodbye, Father; goodbye, sister; goodbyeâ¦
âWhere is he?â I asked.
Amelia led me down the hallway with her hands on my shoulders.
âIâm going to call you Celeste while weâre in there,â she said as we approached a closed door. âKate is very overwhelmed. Using your real name will make it easier for her to see your connection to Cole.â
âShe already has the easy part,â I mumbled.
âNo,â Amelia said, almost to herself. âShe doesnât.â
She opened the door. Cole was inside, huddled on a squashy green couch. Kate was next to him, practically sitting in his lap. He looked up when we walked in. She tightened her grip on his shoulders.
âKate, Iâd like you to meet Celeste Bishop,â Amelia said, choosing to erase any memory of our first meeting. âCeleste, this is Noahâs mother, Kate.â
Kateâs eyes darted toward me, but when they met mine, she looked away. âI donât have to leave, do I?â
Amelia smiled smoothly. âI thought we could go down the hall.â
âNo,â said Kate, her eyes tight and snapping. âSheâs one of thoseâ¦those people.â
âKate, Celeste was abducted, same as Noah. She has no ties to the cult.â
âI donât care. Iâm not leaving him with her.â
âSheâs my sister,â Cole spat, wriggling feebly in a cage of white sweater and gold rings. âHer name is Avery.â
âHoney, no,â Kate cried, cupping Coleâs cheek.
