Chapter 15.
With the group split in two in the âLand Rovers,â they were on the way back to the cottage, simply happy they were not having to walk. It was only Pearl the dog walker, used to walking, and all elements the weather throws at her.
They were surprised that the main roads were passable as they seemed clear of the deep snow.
âThe snow ploughs were out this morning,â Gerry told them.
âI have always wondered how the drivers of the snow ploughs get to work.?â Jude said, making the group she was with laugh.
âWhat is so funny?â Jude asked quite seriously, as Billie put her arm around her and gave her an affectionate squeeze.
Arriving at the cottage they had come from the road, the first time since Friday, as all weekend they had been going out from the back door and walking across the fields. The noticed for the first time their cars covered in deep snow where it had drifted in the wind during the night.
When both groups had arrived, Freya, and Pearl went inside to let the two dogs out, followed by the others leaving Billie, and Ellen with Gerry, and the farmer, whose name was Ted.
âWhile Ted is here with me and his âLand Rover,â we will tow the two cars out of the thick snow and check the batteries are not flat.â Gerry told them.
âThanks Gerry that would be great.â Billie told her, while Ellen went inside with the bag Belinda had given her, and to get the car keys from Pearl for her car.
Around twenty minutes later both cars pulled clear from the snow and had their engines running.
âAll seems okay.â Said Gerry.
âWe may have to tow you up the lane in the morning, letâs see what happens overnight.â She added.
âAll farmers watch the daily weather forecast, it is breed in you, something you always do, and I know there is no more snow forecast, if anything it will be rain.â Ted, who had been quiet up to now suddenly announced.
âLetâs hope you are right then Ted.â Gerry told him, just as her phone started to ring.
âSorry Hun, we just towed the cars out of the snow and checked the batteries werenât flat for tomorrow.â Ellen heard Gerry say, guessing it was Belinda she was speaking too.
âYes, we are on our way back now.â Gerry replied.
âThat was Belinda, she wondered if everything was okay as we have been longer than expected.â Gerry told Billie, and Ellen.
âGot to go, see you in the morning.â Gerry told them getting back into her car.
âI wish I was going back to Belinda.â Ellen thought and felt a little envious.
âCome on, letâs go and find out what Freya has been up too, she is probably dying to tell us all.â Laughed Billie, as she put her arm around her friendsâ shoulder, and they made their way towards the cottage.
Within minutes the group of friends, and the two dogs sat in front of the fire, as another couple of logs added and it was warm and welcoming.
